In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs. Here is a portrait of Thomas William House Sr., the 19th Mayor of Houston. House, born in Stoke St. Gregory, Somerset, England in 1814, was of Dutch heritage and moved to Houston in 1838 to open a bakery and confectionary. Houston became known for selling the first ice cream in Houston before investing in wholesale of dry goods, groceries, cotton, and transportation, such as steamboats. He served as an alderman in 1857 and 1862. He was elected Mayor in 1862 for one term. Afterward, House opened Houston’s first public utility, the Houston Gas Company, as well as the first street railway. A supporter of the Confederacy, House also became famous for trading cotton to foreign markets for supplies and munitions, despite Union blockades, and equipment for the Houston Light Guards, a local Confederate militia. He died in 1880.
