Tidal Wave – Lemon Yellow (2011)

Tudor Mitroi, born in Bucharest, Romania, earned his MFA from the University of North Texas and teaches painting and drawing at Sam Houston State University. His work has been featured in Dallas Visual Art Center, Rudolph Blume Fine Arts, and more. A common theme in Mitroi’s artworks is the use of paints, maps, rulers, and documentary images to create mixed media sculptures of islands, land masses, and/or countries. Here is one of his pieces, measuring 11 inches high and 18 inches wide, that seems to show an abstracted island mostly painted in yellow. The left portion has an example of negative space, the empty space within the artwork, that may represent a lake. The top right portion has a painting of what may be clouds, buildings, or, as the title hints, structures alongside a beach perhaps. This could be considered abstract art, which is when a piece moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come to their own interpretations.

Tudor Mitroi, nacido en Bucarest, Rumanía, obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes en la Universidad del Norte de Texas y enseña pintura y dibujo en la Universidad Estatal de Sam Houston. Sus obras han sido exhibidas en el Dallas Visual Art Center, en Rudolph Blume Fine Arts, y en otros lugares. Un tema recurrente en las obras de Mitroi es el uso de pinturas, mapas, reglas, e imágenes documentales para crear esculturas de técnica mixta que representan islas, masas terrestres, y/o países. Aquí se presenta una de sus obras, de 11 pulgadas de alto por 18 de ancho, que parece representar una isla abstracta, pintada predominantemente en amarillo. La sección izquierda exhibe un ejemplo de espacio negativo, el espacio vacío dentro de la obra de arte, que podría representar un lago. La parte superior derecha contiene la representación de lo que podrían ser nubes, edificios, o, tal como sugiere el título, tal vez estructuras situadas junto a una playa. Esto se puede considerar como un ejemplo de arte abstracto, cuando una obra se distancia de la realidad para jugar con formas y figuras, invitando así al espectador a elaborar sus propias interpretaciones.
