Time Keeper (2022)

Kelly Moran, born in New York in 1959, is a visual artist whose practice includes painting, ceramics, printmaking, assemblage, and collage. She taught printmaking at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts from 2011-2016, and her artworks are in the collections of Florida Gulf Coast University, New Orleans Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and more. Within Bush Intercontinental Airport is one of her artworks that measures one-and-a-half feet high and wide. Moran considers this piece as both assemblage and collage. Assemblage is a three-dimensional artwork made of a combination of found materials; collage is a technique where an artist reassembles different parts of existing images into a new work. The background seems to be a collage made of various patterns cut from different sources, such as a children’s book, a map, wallpaper, dogs, and watches, clocks, and radios perhaps cut from ads. In the foreground are two vintage dress cut outs covered in watch faces, watch gears and parts, and screws that have been coated with clear resin. According to Moran, she has been an avid collector of vintage ephemera for nearly her entire life. Is this artwork a metaphor for sealing the past in time?
