Cathie Kayser is print artist based in Houston who co-founded PrintHouston in 2009. Keyser’s practice includes various printing techniques, such as plate lithography, woodcuts, intaglio, screenprints, and monotypes. Here is an example of one of her artworks that combines different printing methods: intaglio and lithograph. Intaglio is when an image is etched or engraved into a surface, then covered with ink that is wiped off; the ink, trapped in the etching, is pressed onto another surface, creating a copy. Lithography is when an image is drawn directly onto a surface using an oil-based ink; then, chemicals are added to fix the ink to the surface to then be pressed onto another surface. These techniques were applied to Canson Edition, a 100% cotton paper with a smooth surface specially made for printmaking. The title refers to a Greek mythological figure who was blind but could foretell the future. A psychopomp is a being that leads people into an afterlife. This artwork seems to show Tiresias, covered in a net, leading the viewer to a circular plotting diagram. In the background are abstract blotches of what could be landmasses. This image may be an abstract way to show how Tiresias navigates time and space to tell others the future.
