Beaumont-based artist Kurt Dyrhaug, originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, is a professor of art at Lamar University whose sculptures and drawings have been included in over 170 national juried and invited exhibitions, including the Galveston Art Center, Dishman Art Museum, University of Dallas, and Texas A&M University. Many of his sculptures are inspired by the agricultural and nautical tools and machinery from his experiences living in southeast Texas. Dyrhaug believes his sculptures give these forms new meanings and potential for use. Here is one of these sculptures, located in Bush Intercontinental Airport, that measures 16 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 11 inches deep. It appears to be the tail section of a jet with two horizontal stabilizers and a vertical stabilizer on top of a set of wheels. The body of the plane, the fuselage, is round and hollow; the title hints that the sculpture’s yellow color is a reference to Tonka trucks, which are a series of commonly yellow, construction-type trucks first made in 1946. Though the sculpture seems to be textured and painted to seem like wood, it is made of cast iron coated in enamel. What uses do you see with this reimagined tail section?
