Spread across the baggage carousels for international arrivals in Terminal E of Bush Intercontinental Airport are 360 suitcases that light up in different colors that change continuously. They are made of cast resin and illuminated by an LED system to not only decorate the carousels but help travelers find the baggage claim area. The colors alternate between red, green, purple, and more. The light pattern is inspired by data collected from the Hubble telescope, creating countless patterns and rhythmic movement of the lighting. As well, the suitcases slightly vary in size and shape. The title, “Travel Light,” can be taken literally or figuratively, as both a series of lights at the end of travel for airport visitors or as advice to travel with minimal things. This humor is indicative of The Art Guys, an artist duo of Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing who were conceptual artists whose collaboration spanned more than 35 years, from 1983 to 2019. They met as students at the University of Houston in the early 1980s and have been included in more than 150 exhibitions in museums, galleries, and public spaces throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
