A triptych is an artwork that is made up of three parts. Each of the three parts can work independently and together to make a unified artwork. Here, artist Trudy Sween created an abstract piece using acrylic on three separate canvases featuring bright green, white, red, and different shades of blue on a grey background. Though many of the shapes are rectangular, others are more oblong or irregular. The shapes on the paintings on the right and left are both thinner and longer, like peninsulas, that begin from closer to the top edge of their canvases. The shapes in the middle painting connect to the shapes from the other paintings from the middle of the canvas. What do you see? A portion of a city or piece of land like a map? A system of wires? Abstract art allows for artworks and viewers to have a conversation on meaning. Sween, the artist, was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1929, moving to Houston in 1958. Her papers are included in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, and her work has been exhibited internationally in 130 museums and galleries.
