Trumpeters and Young Girls Dancing - after original in the Florentine Cathedral

A relief is when a sculpture remains attached to a solid background of the same material. This piece is considered a bas-relief, a sculpture made by carving a design that slightly rises from its material. Also, this is a plaster relief, a copy of one of 10 marble panels that illustrate Psalm 150 from the Christian Bible, originally carved by the Florentine sculptor Luca della Robbia from 1431-1438. The original panels are part of the balcony of the Cantoria of the Florentine Cathedral in Florence, Italy. This piece could have been made by filling a mold or cast of the original work with liquid plaster, which is a mixture of lime, gypsum, sand, and water, and set to harden, shown by the fact that this piece is larger than the original by a few inches. The relief captures the part of the scripture that goes: “Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, […] praise him with timbrel and dancing…” At the bottom of the relief is a brass plaque that states: “IN MEMORY OF CACILIE SCHNITZER.” Why do you think this was dedicated to someone?

Esta obra se considera un bajorrelieve, una escultura realizada tallando un diseño que sobresale ligeramente de su material. Además, esto es un relieve de yeso, una copia de uno de los 10 paneles de mármol que ilustran el Salmo 150 de la Biblia cristiana, originalmente tallado por el escultor florentino Luca della Robbia entre 1431 y 1438. Los paneles originales forman parte del balcón de la Cantoria de la Catedral Florentina en Florencia, Italia.
