Tryna Get Like You (2022)

Mark Francis, born in New Orleans in 1982, is a multi-disciplinary artist who grew up in the Alief neighborhood of Houston. His artworks have been featured at the Blaffer Art Museum, Community Artists Collective, Houston Museum of African American Culture, and more. Here is one of his mixed media artworks that measures over five feet high and nearly four feet wide. The background, or layer furthest from the viewer, are drawings of two men with color pencil on mulberry paper; they are layered with pieces of paper of different materials such as decorative paper, papyrus straw paper, card stock, and watercolor paper painted with acrylic. The artwork features two elder, Black men posing alongside each other. The different types of paper make up their details and clothing, such as hats, vest, blazer, buttons, and gold tooth. The title refers to a compliment where the speaker conveys light-hearted envy of another person’s status or fashion. Francis said the artwork: “creates a metaphor for the way Black life is similarly full of depth and complexity not always perceived in short interactions. The use of both 3d and 2d media gives a visual push-pull between the brain and the eye to create space, as though the subjects are there with you…”

Mark Francis, nacido en Nueva Orleans en 1982, es un artista multidisciplinario que creció en el barrio de Alief en Houston. Sus obras han sido exhibidas en el Blaffer Art Museum, el Community Artists Collective, el Houston Museum of African American Culture, y más. Aquí presentamos una de sus obras de técnica mixta, que mide más de cinco pies de alto y casi cuatro pies de ancho. El fondo, o la capa más alejada del espectador, consiste en dibujos de dos hombres realizados con lápiz de color sobre papel de morera; sobre estos se superponen fragmentos de papel de diversos materiales, tales como papel decorativo, papel de papiro y paja, cartulina, y papel para acuarela pintado con acrílico. La obra de arte representa a dos hombres negros mayores posando uno junto al otro. Diferentes tipos de papel conforman sus detalles y vestimenta, tales como sus sombreros, chalecos, chaquetas, botones, y un diente de oro. El título alude a un cumplido mediante el cual el hablante expresa una envidia desenfadada hacia el estatus o el estilo de otra persona. Francis dijo sobre la obra: “Crea una metáfora de la manera en que la vida de las personas negras está, de igual modo, repleta de una profundidad y complejidad que no siempre se perciben en las interacciones breves. El uso de medios tanto tridimensionales como bidimensionales genera un juego visual de atracción y repulsión entre el cerebro y el ojo para crear espacio, como si los sujetos estuvieran allí, presentes junto a ti...”
