Kia Neill, born in Chicago in 1978, is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. Her public art has been featured at the Meow Wolf Convergence Station in Denver, Children’s Museum of Denver, the Town of Silverthorne, amongst others. Here is a mixed media piece by Neill, or when an artwork has more than one medium or material, made with graphite, acrylic, and ink on polypropylene paper (a waterproof, tear-resistant paper) that measures nine inches tall and six inches wide. The piece shows an organic form with sharp shells and a translucent body. It seems to be inspired by arthropods and gastropods, such as barnacles, sea snails, and sea slugs, that are both invertebrates. Note the detail of the organism’s organs and shells, contrasting the soft and fluid to the sharp and hard. Neill said: “I am influenced by form and pattern within nature itself, the way nature is represented in manufactured replications, and how nature is presented as artifacts in museums.” The title hints that this is part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works.
