Born in Latvia in 1934, Sven Lukin immigrated to the US in 1949 and has been featured in major museums all over the country, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Here is a drawing by Lukin from 1965 using blue, green, and orange graphite and black ink on paper. The artwork features most of the drawing in the center surrounded by negative space, which is the empty space around and between the subjects of an image. In this case, the white space frames the central drawing, causing the viewer’s attention to focus more on the details. Lukin creates a rectangle that rises from a black line using hatching, a shading technique using close, parallel lines to create areas of light and dark; note how the lower left of the rectangle is lighter than the rest by spacing out the lines further apart. The rectangle forms around what seems to be either a pipe or music note. Lukin uses dark blue to create depth to the black form, both containing a green, orange, and light blue center.
