Earlie Hudnall, Jr.’s images often focus on the African American communities throughout Houston, such as Trinity Gardens, Sunnyside, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Wards. A common home structure throughout these communities is known as a shotgun house, known for their compact, affordable design that allows breezes to flow through them, especially important without air conditioning. Many shotgun houses were built from the end of the American Civil War through the 1920s. Hudnall, Jr. took an interesting angle of view for this image, capturing multiple houses in a row. Notice the patios in front of the homes that allow for clothes to be hung dry, as well as for neighbors to sit next to and talk to each other. However, some of these homes are empty and in need of repair. This photo was taken in the 1990s. Consider the years and lives these homes have hosted at this point.
