Mississippi-born Earlie Hudnall, Jr. has lived in Houston since the 1970s and has been practicing photography for more than 40 years, maintaining his practice of using film negatives and gelatin silver prints. Gelatin silver prints, introduced in the late 1800s, are made from a process where paper is coated with light-sensitive baryta, made up of silver salts and gelatin, to help brighten another gelatin containing an image. This process creates a unique clarity between black and white due to the smooth surface of the gelatin. Consider this intensive practice relative to digital photography. In this photograph, an elder woman sits in a rocking chair near a bed and telephone while looking past the camera and off into a distance. The brightness of her dress and face contrast with the dark corners of the photograph. What is she thinking about? What life has she lived? What emotion does her face show?
