George Smith, born in New York in 1941, moved to Houston in 1981 to become a professor of sculpture at Rice University until his retirement in 2010. Smith co-founded Project Row Houses in 1993. Here is one of his paintings made with an oil stick, or oil paint formed into a pen-like shape, on paper that measures three-and-a-half feet high and nearly five feet wide. It features a primarily white background with grey lines that angle and intersect with each other, forming what may be mirroring arrowheads or an hourglass. Note how the use of the oil stick scrapes on the paper, making the strokes seem scratchy or static-like towards the bottom while the top is more filled in. What do you think this image represents? This could be considered a work of abstract art, which is when an artist moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come with their own interpretations. Smith said: “At its best, the Abstract Expressionist approach, like the Jazz music that I admire, provides me with an arena in which to express my emotions and spiritual aspirations.”
