Gael Stack, born in Chicago in 1941 and died in 2026, moved to Houston in 1973. She was a professor of art at the University of Houston until 2022. Her paintings are in the public collections of the: Beaux Art Museum in France; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Menil Collection, and many more. This oil painting on a canvas measuring over six feet high and 10 feet long is characteristic of Stack’s aesthetic: a dark background, chalk-like brush strokes, and scribbled writings. For example, the left portion has a horizontal column of scribbled writing that is incomprehensible as the words fade and/or overlay each other. On the right is a structure, perhaps a small house, whose empty outlines on a dark blue background almost make it seem like a blueprint. The most legible thing is a person sitting with their head bowed into their clasped hands. Per the title, are they mourning? Are the illegible words their thoughts? Are we seeing an intimate moment of grief? This could be considered abstract art, which is when an artist moves away from reality to play with shapes and forms and invites viewers to come with their own interpretations.
