Vanishing Edge (1989)

Sculptor Jesús Bautista Moroles, born in Corpus Christi in 1950 and died in 2015, is known for his monumental granite works. Moroles received the National Medal of Arts in 2008 and has over 2,000 works held in public and private collections all over the world. The Civic Art Collection has three sculptures by Moroles, this one being the smallest in terms of width since it measures four feet high, 16 inches wide, and 10.5 inches deep. It is made of Fredericksburg red granite, a stone quarried from Bear Mountain near the city of Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country. Note the granite’s famous warm red color and smooth surface. The sculpture looks like a comb with fine teeth coming from what appears to be a handle. Moroles has other sculptures titled “Vanishing Edge” that are made of different colors and types of granite; each of them has the motif, or recurring element or subject within or amongst an artist’s work(s), of fine teeth coming out of a tall, slender pylon. There are variations of the “Vanishing Edge” made in 1988, 1993, 1991, 1997, and more and range in sizes; this variation, from 1989, may be one of the largest in the series.

Moroles recibió la Medalla Nacional de las Artes en 2008 y cuenta con más de 2.000 obras que forman parte de colecciones públicas y privadas por todo el mundo. La Colección de Arte Cívico alberga tres esculturas de Moroles; de ellas, esta es la más pequeña en cuanto a su anchura, ya que mide cuatro pies de alto, 16 pulgadas de ancho, y 10,5 pulgadas de profundidad. Está realizada en granito rojo de Fredericksburg, una piedra extraída de Bear Mountain cerca de la ciudad de Fredericksburg en la región de Texas Hill Country. Nota el famoso color rojo cálido del granito y su superficie lisa. La escultura se asemeja a un peine de dientes finos que emergen de lo que parece ser un mango. Moroles posee otras esculturas tituladas “Vanishing Edge” también realizadas en granitos de distintos colores y tipos; cada una de ellas presenta el motivo, el elemento o tema recurrente dentro de la obra o el conjunto de obras de un artista, de unos dientes finos que brotan de un pilón alto y esbelto. Existen variaciones de “Vanishing Edge” creadas en 1988, 1993, 1991, 1997, y otros años, las cuales varían en tamaño; esta versión, que data de 1989, podría ser una de las más grandes de la serie.
