Painter Alexis Serio Hughes, born in New York in 1976, is a professor of art at the University of Texas at Tyler. Her artworks have been exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University, Wichita Falls Museum of Art, and more. Here is one of her oil paintings that measures nearly four feet high and over five feet wide. It is a landscape of green plains under a cloudy sky. The contours of the plains and its hills and valleys are defined by different levels of shadow and light. The clouds contain shades of purple and pink, perhaps meaning that this is during sunset. The background is a yellow horizon where the sun seems to still be up; the clouds become more abstracted further into the background. The title describes having a feeling of longing for or impulse toward wandering. The painting’s serene and calm colors of green, yellow, and purple are perhaps capturing a fond memory. Hughes said: “My paintings are philosophical and formal investigations about the visual perception of light and color, the personal experience of remembering and inventing, and the natural illusiveness of time… They are reflections of my past, the events that I have drawn out as precious time and the stories of beauty I wish to share with the viewer.”
