About the Artwork:
What's it To Ya? (2012)
by Meredith Jack

Meredith "Butch" Jack, born in Kansas in 1943, was the Emeritus Professor of Sculpture at Lamar University from 1976-2010 before his death in 2024. He is known for his abstract artworks, saying: “The process of discovery is the enjoyment of making… if I knew exactly what something was going to look like when it was finished, I probably wouldn’t make it." Here is one of his abstract sculptures that measures over two feet high, over one-and-a-half feet wide, and one foot deep. It is made with stabilized Styrofoam and steel that’s been coated with a polyurethane rigidizer, to harden and seal soft materials with a heat-resistant surface, and gesso, graphite, and spray fixative. The sculpture is in the form of a rectangular prism with a thick ring emerging from the top. A chunk of material, perhaps broken from something larger, emerges from the ring. As well, the base of the triangular prism appears to be broken. As an abstract piece, the artist moved away from reality to play with shapes and forms to invite viewers to come with their own interpretations. Even the title challenges the viewer to make sense of the sculpture.

¿Y a ti qué te importa? (2012)
