Originally from Louisiana, jewelry artist Debbie Wetmore has lived in Houston for most of her life. Prior to beginning her jewelry career, she studied architecture and commercial art. An avid collector of beadwork, jewelry, and artifacts, Wetmore creates complex artworks that combines these materials into a single piece. Here is an example of assemblage by Wetmore, which is a three-dimensional, artistic form that combines objects found by the artist. Wetmore took what appears to be a jewelry box and lined the inside with pages from a book or books. Inside the box compartments are an array of found objects, or items in an artwork that are not normally considered materials for art since they have non-art functions. For example, there is a sterling silver fork, various stones, bones, and more. By placing everyday objects in a jewelry box, Wetmore contrasts the valuable with the common, creating a tension for the viewer to find value and meaning that they may not have. On the lid’s interior is the phrase “WHAT IS A COLOR 2” painted with a stencil, hinting that this may be part of a series, a collection of works that share a theme, style, or technique to create unified works.
