In 2022, Houston City Council accepted 52 mayoral portraits into the Civic Art Collection after Hurricane Harvey damaged them, many of which were created before the establishment of the Civic Art Program in 1999. By formally accepting them into the Collection, the portraits can be maintained and conserved. Most of the portraits are reproductions of original paintings or photographs. Here is a portrait of William Harrison King, the 16th Mayor of Houston. King, born in Princess Anne, MD in 1814, moved to Texas in 1837 to live in Caldwell and become one of the town’s first postmasters. He then moved to Houston in 1845 and owned a brickyard before becoming an alderman. King was elected Mayor in 1859 for one term. He died in 1867 and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery where one of his brickyards was formerly located.
