George Herbert Walker Bush, born in Massachusetts in 1924, was the 41st president of the US, as well as the 43rd Vice President, 11th Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and a member of the US House of Representatives for Texas’ 7th District. Bush had called Texas home since his mid-20s and spent the last years of his life in Houston, dying in 2018; his presidential library and museum was completed in 1997 in College Station, Texas near Texas A&M University. As well, Houston Intercontinental Airport bears his name and contains this eight-foot-tall, bronze sculpture that was originally intended to be at his presidential library. The sculpture is set on a pedestal surrounded by a custom terrazzo floor set with a wreath and lone star that symbolizes Texas. It stands within an alcove with highlights of the former president's life. The work depicts Bush walking into the wind, with his tie waving behind him, as he tosses his jacket over his shoulder while his left hand holds a book. David Adickes, the sculptor, was born in Huntsville, Texas in 1927 and has work that spans decades, including a series of 43 busts of American presidents at Presidents Park, Virgina.
