Joseph “Joe” O'Connell, born in Arizona in 1967, founded his studio Creative Machines in 1995 to support his creative projects, such as his site-specific installations, a genre of three-dimensional art created for a specific location that transforms the space. His installations can be found in the cities of Calgary, Tucson, San Diego, Himeji, Atlanta, Lenexa, and more. Here is one of his installations outside an entrance to the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston that measures 30 feet high, 70 feet long, and 25 feet deep. The sculpture is made of 32 stainless steel and aluminum wedges of various lengths supported with two arcing supports of steel; the base of the sculpture is a pool with over 20 fountains. Together, it resembles a large wing flying over water with the fountains mimicking the force of the wing’s beat. At night, LED lights of different, shifting colors illuminate the wing and fountains. Originally, the sculpture had a motor that moved the pushrods and helical shaft up and down from the sculpture’s center in a cascading pattern, making the wing seem like it was flying.

Aquí se presenta una de sus instalaciones, situada en el exterior de una de las entradas del Centro de Convenciones George R. Brown, en el centro de Houston, que mide 30 pies de alto, 70 pies de largo, y 25 pies de profundidad. La escultura está compuesta por 32 cuñas de acero inoxidable y aluminio de diversas longitudes, sostenidas por dos soportes de acero en forma de arco; la base de la escultura es un estanque con más de 20 fuentes. En conjunto, la obra evoca la imagen de una gran ala que vuela sobre el agua, con las fuentes simulando la fuerza del aleteo. Por la noche, luces LED de diferentes colores cambiantes iluminan tanto el ala como las fuentes. Originalmente, la escultura contaba con un motor que movía las varillas de empuje y el eje helicoidal de arriba abajo desde el centro de la estructura, siguiendo un patrón en cascada que hacía parecer que el ala estuviera volando.
