This monument complex in Tranquillity Park within Downtown Houston contains a fountain, pools, and five cylindrical towers made from concrete, silver, brick, mortar, and stainless steel. It is across from City Hall and a gift to the people of Houston from businessman and civic leader Gus Sessions Wortham. Wortham was born in Mexia, TX in 1891 and moved to Houston in 1915 where he co-founded the American General Insurance Company, which would become one of the nation's largest insurance and financial-services organizations. Tranquillity Park is named after the Sea of Tranquility on the moon, where the Apollo 11 mission first landed in 1969. The monument complex features the five towers to represent the Apollo’s five rocket boosters; normally, the towers erupt with water that pools in the basins, perhaps symbolizing the exhaust from the boosters. The sloping, angled construction of the terrain may represent the surface of the moon. Born in New Orleans, Charles Tapley grew up in Houston, graduating from Rice University in 1955. He designed this complex to honor the first moon landing ten years prior, built in 1979, while being a professor at the University of Houston and Rice.
