Erin Curtis, born in New York in 1977, is a painter who has created large-scale, site-specific installations and public art projects for the Chicago Transit Authority, City of Washington DC, City of Austin, and Rice University. Her artworks have been exhibited at the Galveston Art Center, Conduit Gallery, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and more. Here is one of her acrylic paintings on canvas that measures over six-and-a-half feet high and five feet wide. The painting shows a layered, complex image of a grid of squares over a series of vertical stripes of various colors to create textile-like pattern. For example, the middle features a diamond while four crescent-like shapes correspond with each corner of the canvas. Curtis used a specific process to create this piece where she paints, cuts, and repositions sections of the canvas. Note how some of the squares and stripes in the crescents do not line up with the rest of the canvas. Curtis said: “…I find tensions and harmonies between patterns and colors that are physically and optically intertwined. My paintings are balanced with acts of chance and deliberation and planning, creating moments where the surface moves both fast and slow at the same time.”
