About the Artwork:
Untitled (1980)
by Ilya Bolotowsky

This 12-foot-high by 16-foot-wide acrylic painting on canvas was painted by Ilya Bolotowsky just one year before his death in 1981. Bolotowsky was born in St. Petersburg, Russa in 1907. The artwork was donated by art philanthropist Alice Pratt Brown, then a member of the Texas Commission on the Arts and Humanities, of the Brown Foundation to the Public Art Collection. Bolotowsky was influenced by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, using horizontal and vertical geometric pattern and a palette restricted to primary colors and neutrals. During the Great Depression, Bolotowsky was hired by the Works Projects Administration to create a series of murals, including one for the Hall of Medical Sciences at the New York World's Fair of 1939. The original mural was destroyed when the Fair was torn down, but many of his sketches remain and are in prominent museum collections around the world. This artwork is a recreation of the mural by Bolotowsky. Note the various oblong and geometric shapes in whites, blues, reds, and greens scattered across a grey background, as well as lines that intersect or stand alone. It is an abstract piece, requiring viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations. What do you see?
