Catherine Colangelo, born in San Antonio in 1969, is a visual artist whose artworks have been exhibited at the Galveston Arts Center, Art League Houston, Blue Star Contemporary, and more. Inspired by her love for her daughter, Colangelo created a series of paintings titled “Star Guardians” using gouache, a water-based paint, and graphite on paper. The paintings often resemble shields, talismans, and magical scrolls. Colangelo said: “Exhibiting a strong sense of flat and frontal design, the work wards off evil spirits with its elaborate patterns, bright colors, and ever-watchful eyes. The work's creation is meditative, slow, and as intuitive as possible, for I tap into a more subconscious realm.” Here is one of the paintings in the series where various complex patterns clash and harmonize with each other to form a talisman with a star and X on it. Note the many geometric shapes and colors that seem simple yet are also complex and overwhelming. For example, there are 12 watchful eyes amongst the triangles, waves, and diamonds. The title hints at the X design that unites the paintings as well as a number that indicates in what order it was completed, reaching up to 50 as of 2025.
