Born 1933 in Colorado, HJ Bott started attending adult life-drawing classes at Greeley State College at 9 years old. At 14, he had his first major two-person exhibit at Trinity University, while attending the Coppini Academy for classical sculpture. In the 1950’s in Germany and France, Bott’s work became politically involved, working for the United States Army as a propaganda analyst. Since then, Bott has shown his work in hundreds of exhibitions, ranging from a bus station in Utah in 1952, to major galleries, art centers and museums in New York, Paris, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Düsseldorf, and Mexico City, among other locations worldwide. He has shown in over 80 solo exhibitions, 16 solo ROBOTT performances, 24 installations, and more than 700 group exhibitions, including 330 invitational survey shows. Bott’s work can be found in over 70 public, museum, city & university collections, and more than 130 corporate collections. He has completed over 20 public commissions and 160 private and corporate commissions. In 1972, Bott developed the DoV system (Displacement of Volume), in which he organizes modules of archetypal patterns and symbols into a grid-like structure, since then this systemic approach is used in all his work.
