Marc Newsome, also known as Marc Furi, is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist who currently draws inspiration from his neighborhood—the Third Ward area of Houston, TX. His art is deeply influenced by the emotional toll of the rapid socio-economic changes due to the area’s gentrification.
Marc has engaged in various public art practices, including the "I Love 3rd Ward House" at Project Row Houses, the Trephonos Audio Phone Project, and the city-funded Mini Murals project. His current art installation, "Third Ward Gentrified Edition," is a 10x10-foot Monopoly board satire at the Station Museum of Contemporary Art. Much of his art utilizes the Monopoly board satire, as he believes it serves as a life-sized emotional translation of the experience of living in a gentrified area.
In Summer 2022, Marc participated in the Dust Marfa residency in Marfa, Texas, where he shot his art film "The Desert Made Me Do It." In Fall 2022, his short film "Root Shock" was screened at the Houston Cinema Arts Festival. From Fall 2020 to 2021, Marc was a guest lecturer at Rice University, where he taught a Video Activism class. He is currently in his third year of the MFA program at the University of Houston.
