Houston, TX

Susan Plum lives and works in Houston. Born in Texas, she spent her early and formative years in Mexico City. As an installation artist, Plum incorporates ritual and performance, which has often included community and neighborhood participants working with her on the powerful ideas of healing and redemption. Adept in a variety of media, her conceptually-driven, humanistic practice invokes women’s rights, human rights, nature and the cosmos, and spiritual and planetary concerns. Plum’s work encompasses paintings, drawing, craft (especially glass-making), sculpture, and jewelry, as well as installation, ritual, and performance. Throughout her career, she has embraced Magic Realism, and she has spent decades cultivating a language that mediates between the mythic, liminal world and contemporary reality. Her art is informed by nature, its bio-diversity, internal structures and order, and a staunch sense of the artist as activist.
