Rusty Scruby’s (b.1964) practice melds his training in musical composition and mathematical studies. Expressed through both two and three-dimensional forms, his works engage with a variety of materials, such as paper, wood, and fibers; encompassing photography, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. At the core of Scruby’s practice is the break-down of shapes and imagery into smaller and smaller components which fold into themselves, split apart, and double-back again. This is easily seen in his main body of photographic works that involve layering repeating moments from the same image; slicing into them to create what Scruby describes as “shifting windows.” Like a musical composition or mathematical equation, they add depth and movement to an otherwise static assemblage of components
