Austin, TX

Evan Voyles was born in Austin, Texas in 1958, and raised both in the city and on his family’s ranch in the nearby Hill Country of Central Texas. A cum laude graduate of Yale University with a degree in Intensive English, Voyles ignored the presumptive trajectory of law school and instead set out to live on the road for over five years, traveling throughout the 50 states. He subsequently found unintended artistry and poetry on the American roadsides: most notably mid-century neon signs. His obsession became a career. As an artist, collector, designer and fabricator, Voyles has pursued this vernacular for almost four decades, through gallery shows, commissions, and in his sign-making business The Neon Jungle. He operates in an old gas station “studio” and has works not only all over Texas but also from New York to California as well as internationally from Europe to Asia, both in private collections and commercial enterprises. In recent years, his artworks -- using ideas and detritus from old signs and backroad junk shops - - have enjoyed success in both solo and group shows. Voyles lives in South Austin with his wife, Gail Chovan, a designer and educator, and their twin children
