Donna Zarbin-Byrne’s projects range from large public installations to individual sculptures and jewel-like objects. Critic Ann-Sargent Wooster has described Zarbin-Byrne as “the gardener of the dreamscape”. She integrates a vast array of materials including encaustic, bronze, ceramics, and found objects. Zarbin-Byrne creates a sense of place where community, culture and history of the location inform the direction of her art. Beyond the traditional concept of sculpture as object, she incorporates light, movement and site to create sculpture as an animate force; a shadow play of movement. Her intent is to activate the environment, to create a state of metamorphosis between observations of nature and creating works in response. Zarbin-Byrne holds her BFA and MFA from the University of Texas, San Antonio, with a concentration in ceramic sculpture. She is a recipient of an Individual Artists Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and has been awarded grants and exhibitions through the Artist in Education program, Illinois Arts Council and a residency with Kipaipai.
