Between You and Me (2014)

Michael Bise, born in Arizona in 1976, earned his MFA from the University of Houston in 2005 and received the Hunting Art Prize in 2012. Bise has taught painting at the Glassell School of Art since 2013 and has had his work featured at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and more. He is known for his drawings, usually done with graphite on paper, that focus on human subjects with photographic attention but disorienting details. Here is an example of his large-scale drawings that measures over five feet high and three-and-a-half feet wide. The image is of a woman sitting on a windowsill as her left hand holds a cup and her right hand holds something. Note how the lower half of the woman and windowsill are visible even though they are shrouded in darkness, such as her lap and the folds of her skirt over her legs. As well, the light from the outside illuminates her blouse, but her face remains half-shrouded in darkness. However, note the missing contents of her right hand, the cup’s perspective, and the murky details of the background. The hyperrealism and inaccuracy contrast with each other, both disorienting and welcoming the viewer.

La imagen muestra a una mujer sentada en el alféizar de una ventana mientras que su mano izquierda sostiene una taza y la derecha sujeta algún objeto. Nota cómo la mitad inferior de la mujer y del alféizar resultan visibles, a pesar de estar envueltas en la penumbra, tal es el caso de su regazo y de los pliegues de la falda sobre sus piernas. Asimismo, la luz proveniente del exterior ilumina su blusa, si bien su rostro permanece parcialmente sumido en la oscuridad. Sin embargo, obsérvese el contenido ausente de su mano derecha, la perspectiva de la copa y los detalles difusos del fondo. El hiperrealismo y la imprecisión contrastan entre sí, desorientando y, a la vez, acogiendo al espectador.
