Bouquet for the Minor Characters (2018)

Lindsey Rose Stern, born in Wisconsin in 1985, earned her MFA in painting from the University of Houston in 2017, where she has been teaching since 2016. Her artworks have been exhibited at Lawndale Art Center, Blaffer Art Museum, Sugarland Art Center, and more. Here is one of her acrylic paintings on canvas that measures four feet high and three feet wide. The painting can be described as surrealist, a genre that explores the creative potential of the unconscious mind that often results in the combination of the illogical and the rational. The artwork contains recognizable objects that are placed together in an unrecognizable way. For example, there is a crane hook, a bow, a red and yellow striped racing flag, a pie chart, and clouds of smoke. However, the bow is tied around a cut portion of the canvas, the smoke changes from grey to green without explanation, and the phrase “Loading….” overlays everything else, like a computer program or video game. Stern said: “During graduate school, I was diagnosed with a neurobiological disorder… I see some of my works as clear documentation of my mental state. Some compositions are bombarded with content, layered with secret moments…”
