Richard Stout, born in Beaumont, TX in 1934 and died in 2020, is a painter and sculptor who taught at the University of Houston for three decades until retiring in 1996. In 2004, he was named Texas Artist of the Year by Art League Houston. His artworks have been featured at the Blanton Museum of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, Menil Collection, and more. Here is one of his acrylic paintings on canvas that measures three feet high and five feet wide. The image could be described as abstract, which is when artists move away from reality to play with shapes and colors to invite viewers to come with their own interpretation. The left portion of the painting is mostly blue that becomes lighter towards the bottom, mixing with green before a white rectangle at the bottom. Nearly halfway is a vertical, orange line that transitions the blue into white and green triangles. On the right portion are squares, rectangles, and trapezoids of brown, cream, and green. Is this a building in front of a blue sky? Note how Stout uses a drybrush technique to create texture and layers where different colors can occupy the same space.
