Richard Stout’s legacy as an artist is broad, deep, and firmly moored to his Texas Gulf Coast origins. Born in 1934 in Beaumont, Texas, Stout became recognized as one of the most important Texas artists of the 20th century, as well as a pivotal member of the Houston art scene. Stout earned his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, and his MFA at the University of Texas at Austin. From 1959-1967 Stout worked as an instructor for the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He then went on to teach at the University of Houston where he influenced generations of artists until his retirement in 1996. Over a sixty-year span of time he produced a vast and mesmerizing body of work of paintings, prints and sculpture, in the process creating both an influential body of work and a commitment to national and international following among artists and collectors. Stout’s expressionist oeuvre, possessing architectural structuralism with geometric precision, has found its place in prominent museum and private collections not only in Texas, but also nationally and internationally. His works have appeared in many major American exhibitions and have traveled to Europe, Australia, and Asia.
