This needlepoint work, an eight feet square, is made of five miles of thread and 2,000,000 stitches on canvas with additional surface details in cotton embroidery floss, metallic threads and stitched details. It took 96 members of the Lone Star Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild three years and fifteen thousand hours to create this wall hanging of 24 blocks. In celebration of the 150-year anniversary of Houston’s founding in 1836, this needlepoint shows panels of historical buildings, figures, and events. The center panel is the seal of the City of Houston. The top left panel shows trains, oil refineries, cattle, and a rocket launch. The top right shows different arts buildings, such as Jones Hall, Hobby Center, and more. The bottom right shows different Houston landmarks, such as City Hall, the Wortham Fountains, the Armillary Sphere, and more. The bottom left shows Houston’s sports teams and buildings. Throughout, viewers will see: a portrait of Sam Houston, the first Texas Capitol Building, seals of five Houston universities, the moon landing, Bush Intercontinental Airport, the logos of Houston newspapers and shopping centers, Houston’s ties to the Confederacy, Buffalo Bayou, and many more.
