Laura Lark, born in Tucson, Arizona in 1962, moved to Houston in the early 1980s where she earned her BA, MA, and MFA from the University of Houston. She received an Artadia Foundation Award in 2004, a Mac Dowell Colony residency in 2012, a Virginia Creative Center for the Arts residency in 2013. Her artwork has been exhibited at Lawndale Art Center, Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, Devin Borden Gallery, and more. From afar, this artwork, measuring over six feet high and over four-and-a-half feet wide, may seem like a photograph or printing of a side profile of a woman’s head. However, Lark used ink on Tyvek, a sheet of synthetic, high-density polyethylene fibers, and a technique called pointillism where the artist makes an image using small, distinct dots. Note how the distance or concentration of the dots creates shading, fullness, and texture of each of the woman’s features. As well, Lark uses negative space, the empty space within the artwork, to simulate light.
