Artist Statement

I have always taken my visual cues from fashion magazines and their photographic depictions of women. My mother idly leafed through them and sketched the models at the kitchen table, as did her mother, in what I have since thought of as a mini Manifest Destiny for bored, suburbanites: each volume brought a new promise: a journey from the dreary reality of drab to the sparkling shores of fab.

My primary interest, as an artist, is how we look at ourselves and one another, and fashion magazines, again, being the nearest thing at hand, are what I use as my resource. When I started making large scale drawings like Janice, I wanted to replicate not only the subject, but the mindless act of turning pages as well. The act of mark making became meditative, however; I found myself measuring out progress by the hour. The result was a self-portrait of sorts, and the stain of ephemera: a big, monochromatic and ghostly print of my pop-culture past.

I am also a writer, and my most recent project is a new venture into self-portraiture. It is a half-scale replica, of myself with a 3D printed head. This doll, named Helen Hawk, is the heroine of the subplot within a novel-in-progress.
