Robyn Arouty, born in New York in 1966, is a pet photographer with over 15 years of experience. She has photographed portraits of family pets and unhoused animals. Portraits are a genre of artwork that represents a specific person. As well, animal portraits have origins in different societies. For example, there are 13 animals in the cave paintings of the Chauvet Cave in France from over 30,000 years ago while mosaics and sculptures featuring dogs have been found from ancient Greece, tracing back to 800 BC. Here is an example of Arouty’s dog portraiture printed on canvas that measures over four feet high and wide. The image features a dog, wearing a pair of glasses, who looks either at or above the viewer. Note how the dog’s tri-colored coat gives it a unique look, including an ‘M’ shaped pattern over its eyes that resemble eyebrows; the ‘eyebrows’ over the eyeglasses give the dog a humorous, skeptical expression.
