Wave Clouds (2018)

Jenny Guarino, born in Australia in 1960, transitioned from a career in meteorology and computing at the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia to a drawing and painting practice. Here is one of her acrylic paintings on two canvases that together measure four feet high and over six feet wide, making it a diptych. A diptych is an artwork consisting of two pieces or panels that together create a single art piece. This painting shows a cloudscape, an artistic representation of clouds, from a plane flying over the clouds. As hinted by the title, these are wave clouds, a cloud form created by atmospheric waves. Note how the shades of blue and white collect and mix through layers and swirls. Without the title, would you know these are clouds or the ocean? Guarino said that, as a frequent flyer, she sketches the view from planes before painting them. She added: “The process itself is controlled chaos created through practiced recipes of paints, pouring medium, and additives of alcohol and silicone. I pour rivers of paint that interrupt, settle and layer, creating spontaneous fields of colors and shapes that represent my geographic memories of the world from above.”

Jenny Guarino, nacida en Australia en 1960, pasó de una carrera en meteorología e informática en la Oficina de Meteorología de Australia a dedicarse a la práctica del dibujo y la pintura. Aquí se presenta una de sus pinturas acrílicas, realizada sobre dos lienzos que, unidos, miden cuatro pies de alto y más de seis pies de ancho, constituyendo así un díptico. Un díptico es una obra de arte compuesta por dos piezas o paneles que, en conjunto, conforman una única obra artística. Esta pintura muestra un paisaje de nubes, una representación artística de las nubes, visto desde un avión que vuela por encima de ellas. Tal como sugiere el título, se trata de nubes ondulatorias, un tipo de formación nubosa generada por ondas atmosféricas. Observe cómo los matices de azul y blanco se acumulan y se mezclan a través de capas y remolinos. Sin el título, ¿sabría usted distinguir si se trata de nubes o de un océano? Guarino dijo que, como viajera frecuente, dibuja a la vista desde los aviones antes de pintarlos. Ella añadió: “El proceso en sí es un caos controlado, generado mediante fórmulas depuradas de pinturas, medios de vertido, y aditivos de alcohol y silicona. Vierto ríos de pintura que se interrumpen, se asientan, y se superponen, creando campos espontáneos de colores y formas que representan mis recuerdos geográficos del mundo visto desde las alturas.”
