(b. 1960)

Houston, Texas

Born in Argentina, Gladys Poorte’s childhood was spent in Buenos Aires. Drawing and making crafts became a very important part of her life from an early age. Together with her brother, Gladys spent many afternoons working on drawings at the kitchen table. During her teenage years Gladys’s family lived and traveled extensively to other countries. The rich cultural diversity she experienced is a major influence in her work. Gladys obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Argentina, a Master’s in Adult Education from Penn State University and later studied Studio Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. Gladys has been a full-time artist for over 20 years. Her practice began primarily in painting but later expanded to include print-making, drawing, photography and installation. Gladys’s work has been shown in various galleries in Texas (Austin, Houston and Dallas), at the Austin City Hall, as well as in many reputable juried shows. It was also included in the 2009 Texas Biennial. After living in Austin, Texas with her husband and daughters for 25 years Gladys and her husband recently moved to Houston. Her family is spread out in four countries on two continents so travel continues to be an important part of her life.
