New York, NY

Born in New York City, my interest in photography started as a teenager. I
was a young photographer, taking pictures on the streets of New York,
documenting the social events of our time. In the late ’60-s, I taught
photography to inner city children in the basement of the Public Theatre.
This time period was my “coming of age”; photography would be my first
love, lasting forever.

In the early ’70-s, I received my MFA Photography at the Rhode Island School of
Design; one of my teachers was Aaron Siskind. Knowing Aaron changed my life; he
taught me that photography was much more than the content we see. Once on a trip
with Aaron, I remember his excitement as he set up his camera in front of a rock. I
looked through his old Rollie, and there it was— the picture was right there, hidden in
plain sight. Through the lens of Aaron’s camera, the rock was brought to life. He
remains my mentor to this day.

I photographed abstractions everywhere- from the decayed walls and graffiti in the
inner cities, to the trees and rocks in the canyons of the Southwest. This period marked
my career as a photographer with an abstract bent, and in one form or another, I have
continued to make images with a blend of the real and abstract.

I became interested in composite photography from the onset of digital photography,
compositing my traditional images into a new form of self-expression. Using Photoshop,
making photographs was no longer exclusive to the snapping of the shutter. Today I’m
more of a hybrid artist, making images wherever I go, and following whatever feels
important.
