Jiyun Song was born in 1975 in Seoul, Korea, and grew up moving back and forth between Korea and Germany. She has B.A. from University of Wisconsin, Madison, and received her Ph.D. in German Studies at Stanford University. After she settled down in Houston, she took a break from teaching German and started to focus on her interest in art by taking classes at Glassell School of Art. She quickly found joy in making 3D works that explore the visual dynamic between different surfaces and colors. Her experience of living abroad most of her life plays a central role in her artwork which grapple with the meaning of “origin/home” and what it means to belong somewhere.
